Povzetek

European Drought Observatory (EDO) is an online tool for early warning, monitoring and forecasting of drought and its impacts across Europe. It offers a traffic-light drought-status information for Europe throughout all year via 10-day Combined Drought Index, thus providing information on drought development within the hydrological cycle and the resulting impacts on vegetation cover. It computes drought indicators at a continental level, while national sectoral authorities add more details for their area of interest.

Opis

European Drought Observatory (EDO) is an online tool for European early warning, monitoring and forecasting of drought and its impacts, based on satellite data, hydro-meteorological modelling and in-situ observations. It offers a traffic-light drought-status information across all Europe and throughout all year via 10-day Combined Drought Index (combines SPI, modelled soil moisture and satellite data on condition of vegetation), thus providing information on drought propagation within the hydrological cycle and the resulting impacts on vegetation cover.

EDO was developed as a response to the need to better understand, monitor, and forecast water scarcity and drought in Europe, and to provide input for the formulation of evidence-based policies in the field. EDO computes drought indicators at a continental level where a range of indicators on rainfall, soil moisture, river low flows, heat (and cold) waves, and photosynthetic activity of the vegetation cover in taken into account; while national, regional, and river basin authorities add more detailed information for their area of interest.
