DriDanube – Drought Risk in the Danube Region

Water Management la la-tint blue
Summary

The project aimed at increasing the resilience of Danube region to the occurrence of drought. Its achievement is shown through main results developed within the project: cross-border coherent maps of drought risk in the region both in climatological sense and in relation to expected yield loss; networks of altogether over 800 active drought impact reporters across 10 participating countries; a new drought monitoring tool Drought Watch covering Danube region and integrating drought risk maps and impact reporters’ data; and a Danube Drought Strategy with its practical model of optimal drought management.

Description

The project aimed at increasing the resilience of the society to the occurrence of drought in the Danube region, by developing a multifaceted tool for drought monitoring based on latest technology, and by developing a strategy for proactive drought response which would consequently help improve cooperation between responsible institutions and decision makers.

One of the major achievements of the DriDanube project was the increased awareness of drought as a larger phenomenon that often goes beyond the national level, and of the ability to detect it in its early stages before it develops into an extreme situation. This significant achievement is shown also through main results that have been created within the project: cross-border coherent maps of drought risk across the Danube region both in climatological sense and in relation to expected yield loss; networks of altogether over 800 active drought impact reporters established across 10 participating countries; a new drought monitoring tool Drought Watch with drought indices covering the entire Danube region and integrating also drought risk maps and impact reporters’ data; and a Danube Drought Strategy with its practical model on optimal drought management, created and published.
